First let me say thanks to Praveen(Our Student in IES,Bangalore) who shared this with us.

Analysis of GATE 2004 conducted by IIT Delhi in Electronics and Communications Branch

Following is the subject level analysis.

Communications 23 marks ie., 15.33% of weight-age -> We can expect 12 to 13 marks in GATE 2012

Control Systems 21 marks ie., 14% -> We can expect 10 to 11 marks

Electronic Devices 20 marks ie., 13.33% -> We can expect around 10 marks from this subject

Signals&Systems 16 marks ie., 10.66 % -> 8 marks

Network Analysis 15 marks ie., 10% -> 7 to 8 marks

Analog Electronics 15 marks ie., 9.33% -> 7 to 8 marks

Digital Electronics 14 marks ie., 10% -> 7 to 8 marks

Electromagnetic Theory 14 marks ie., 9.33% -> 6 to 7 marks

Microprocessors 8 marks ie., 5.33% -> 4 marks from this subject.

We can draw handful conclusions from this.

1. They concentrate more on Communications, Controls, Devices which we should not leave at any cost.

2. Difficulty level also will be high in Communications, Analog and EDC.

3. We may get linked questions in EDC, Communications and Analog.

4. Those who are targeting IITs/IISc should concentrate equally on EMTheory.

How to prepare for ECIL Interview by ECIL working Engineer

This information has been shared by Ashok, presently working ECIL, Hyderabad. Thanking him for his feel of sharing to his juniors. They alone live who live for others. He live longer. This post is purely for ECE/EEE/IN department's aspirants. Hope its useful for all ECIL aspirants from IES,Bangalore.

Coming to point of interest,
ECIL interview panel may contain 7 to 8 members. Unfortunately we may get even DGM cadre guys also in panel. They may take interview for 30mins to 40mins. Interview is of pure technical.
Before entering into the interview, aspirant is advised to go through history of ECIL. About their major projects. Eg.,
1. They designed 32meter antenna in Bangalore which is Biggest in India for Chandrayan.
2. For Light Combat Aircraft, TEJAS they designed Stabilization unit.
3. Complete Security system for Common Wealth Games handled by ECIL
4. Electronic Voting Machines (EVM)
5. Almost all Nuclear plant's control panels
6. Security systems for all Govt., Organizations
7. Sub-systems for all most all Defence related like LAKSHYA aircraft, BRAHMOS, AKASH etc.,
This information is important when they ask "Why do you want to come to ECIL specifically". Answer for this may be like, ECIL is developing Indigenousness technology which is backbone for technology, and from job point of view, its a research oriented job. This answer may be very suitable for working guys.
Working guys may be asked about their work in depth, if they are working in Hardware/Electronics related. Guys with working exp of Software may not get queries much about their work. Working exp of Microwave will definitely fetch to aspirants. They should be of-course prepared for Microwave related questions
Coming to technical side, according to our Ashok,
They will ask first from Frequencies. Band of frequencies in Communications like L-band, C-band, S-band like that. They may ask about what is the range of Radio frequencies/Audio frequencies etc.,
Next level will go to Operational Amplifiers, then Control Systems the Microprocessors.
Questions may be expected from what is Line regulation? or What is Load regulation? or What is Zener drop down? What is Unipolar and what is Bipolar? Cut off frequencies of BJT/FET? Advantages of using FET with high frequencies? etc.,
Electrical Guys along with previous topics may expect more questions from Power Electronics and Drives.
Instrumentation guys can expect questions from Transducers like how to measure temp., etc.,
Freshers should go through throughly about their B.tech/B.E. project. They may ask you to explain about the project with black board also. If they really did the project (sorry to say this... as present day projects are like that....) they can carry their project report with them to panel. Else donot carry but explain in your own words.
For Electrical and Instrumentation guys, we may have to give counter attack few times if they ask more about communications. We can say that communications is not part of our curricula.
For all suggestion is, If you really know then only tell them you know. Eg., everybody know MATLAB. But if you are not confident enough don't tell them that you are confident in that.

How to prepare for Engineering Services Interview.

Engineering services Interview

Unlike CSE interview, ESE interview is quite simple and can be lead by the candidate to the right direction, if properly prepared. Board consists of four members. Chairman and 3 members.

Chairman of the board is from UPSC. Usually UPSC members head the interview boards. If there are multiple boards for a stream, there may be chances of disparities anoy multiple boards. Because marks pattern of one board differs from the other. In such case scaling should be done (But, I don’t know whether it happens or not). Multiple boards for one stream is usual in civil engineering because no. of candidates are more. Normally, one board interviews each candidate for twenty minutes at an average 6 to 7 candidates are interviewed by a board in one session )i.e., either forenoon or afternoon session)

Normally chairman of the board starts the interview with questions related to bio –data like name, village, state, ongoing events in state etc. Deep knowledge in current affairs is not expected in this interview. Fair amount of knowledge regarding current events is sufficient. Reading news paper and magazines like India Today and Front line is sufficient you can simply skip political news in magazines and news papers concentrate on technological issues. Especially science and Tech. Colum in Thursday Hindu newspaper is very much useful. The question corner in this edition is very quite useful. Old questions can be had from the book. The Hindu speaks on scientific facts”.

You must project you self curious in knowing principles of operations of daily using gadgets etc.

In this area some previous questions asked were ¾

1. Principle of working of bowling machine (incidentally this candidate written hobby as cricket in application)

2. Working of spark plug in scooter

3. Working of Xerox machine

4. Working of air conditioner

So, the questions are more based on applications rather than theory.

We can expect questions an

1. Working of LCD, LED TV

2. Internet telephony, IPTV

3. 3 G technology, wireless communication Bluetooth, wifi etc.

4. Orgonic engines

5. Indian space and Defence programs.

6. Climate change adaptation etc.

∴ one must go deep into science and Technology topics. Science technology books of various publishers meant for CSE mains will be useful (like spectrum series, wizard series etc)

At least 20 to 30% of interview will be on present job / studies. The candidate should convincingly tell why he/she is willing to join Engg. services. There is every possibility that interviewers counter your arguments interms of pay, nature of job etc. please, keep in mind that the pay package in engg. services is less than that of PSU’s. But, you can talk about rapid promotions etc. Responsibility is no doubt high in engg. services. Job nature is less technical and more administrative. One should hare good interpersonal skills to get the job dare by subordinates. Such quality has to be displayed during interview while you communicate.Don’t show case your present career / job as bad one. You speak about relative advantages in engg. services.

Be clean and true to yourself, regarding why you would like to join engg. services. Brush up basic theoretical principles. There are no questions seeking you to analyze technically too much (usually done in BARC interviews). Here, also concentrate more on applications. For eg:-what kind of motor is used in a mixer / grinder and why?

Have some idea regarding the sectors to which your engg. stream relates. For example – electrical engineers should know about per capita electrical energy consumption, proportion of varies kinds of electrical energy sources, national grids, HVDC links etc. similarly, civil engineers may be asked an interlinking of rivers, urban planning etc.

Subject experts will be coming from varied fields. Depending on their fields their questions vary. One or two professors or vice chancellors will be there. You have to ensure that their questions should not be missed because; their questions will be in general nature. The questions by other experts are some times related to their field only for ex: if question like – “which kind of motor is used in Delhi metro trains?” are asked, it is …………………….. beyond some doubt about correctness.

The simplest solution to get rid of interview troubles is performing better in written exam. Having performed better in written, candidates confidence will be at peak and there by chances of getting good interview scores and hence getting top rank will be enhanced

Guidelines for M.tech/M.E. admissions for CSE/IT Branch by IISc,bangalore post graduate.

The following analysis is given by post graduate from Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. Thanks to Charan who shared this information in our discussion forum. In his words,

Am pretty impressed by the way of running your institute (Got feedback from our batch mates in IISc here), and your committment in sharing your expierience (Nobody in India is doing this). So, I too would like to be a member in IES, and share something from my side.

These are just suggestive / advisory only. People have to contact with the colleges in taking final decision.

Suggested order of preferences:

1. Software Engineering & Programming

3. Network & Internet Engineering or Distributed Computing Systems

Selection Criteria:

For Computer Science, the selection is, generally based on GATE score. However, some IITs, NITs and other university colleges may conduct a written test / Interview for selection into M.Techs. In such a case, the GATE score is given 70% weightage and remaining 30% weightage is for the written test / Interview. The exact procedure will be known by referring to the information brochure issued by the colleges for admission into M.Tech. The selection criteria may vary from year to year and from college to college.

* In IISc Bangalore, IIT Madras, Kharagpur, Roorkee, the selection is based on GATE score. However in other colleges apart from GATE score, a written test or interview is being conducted for selection into M.Tech. If a student possess excellent rank in the GATE, then direct admission will also be given without any interview.

* In IIIT,Hyderabad the admission is based on written test and interview.

* For Central University, Hyderabad, selection is based on written test and interview.

* If GATE rank is within top 300, there is a chance of getting into IITs.

* If the rank is more than 300, the students can try for those IITs where there is

written test or interview for selection and also apply for NITs and other colleges depending on the merit level..

Non Stipend M.Tech:

Most of the IITs, NITs & other colleges have certain seats reserved in the Non-stipend category. Here, the UGC scholarship will not be given. All the expenses shall be borne by the students only. Those students who are economically sound and desperate to join IITs, can apply . Students, even with low GATE score can get good specializations.

MS Programme:

Offered by most of the IITs and IISc. The MS course is equivalent to M.Tech. It involves research work and takes about 2^1/2 to 3yrs to complete the course. Very few seats are available in the IITs. Admissions are given twice in a year (in June & Nov. months). Admission are based on GATE score + Degree marks + interview. Candidates with reasonably good GATE score and good academic record (> 70% marks) have chances of getting admission. UGC scholarship will be given throughout the program. Students who can’t get MTech admission in IITs, generally try for MS Course in IITs.

Special attention for SC/ST students :

I strongly suggest you to apply for premier institutes like IIT’s irrespective of your percentiles. Luck may favor you.

Special attention for Girls:

Certain universities have girls reservation, eg. Andhra Pradesh. Hence even at lower percentiles compared to boys, girls have fair chances.

Special note for Second Class students:

If you see the rules & regulations of various premier Institutes, 1^st class in Engineering is the pre-requisite. If you apply online, your application will be rejected. Hence I suggest you to apply manually with a request letter stating your present strengths substantiating with GATE Score and your desire to do M.Tech in the respective IIT. Request them to give you a chance so that you can prove yourself. Most of the professors would like to encourage the students who are seriously interested, inspite of the above –ve point, if the GATE score is good and the student has a burning desire to join the desired specialization in the desired IIT. They may consider your application with sympathy and may give you a chance after a personnel Interview. some of our old students with second class in their graduation got admission on similar grounds. Be bold and be positive. Definitely, you can reach your goal.

Note:

Those who have got relatively low scores in the GATE, are strongly advised to apply for more number of colleges (not less than 10) so that they can get admission in at least one college in the desired specialization.

The students shall be in-touch with the daily English newspapers ( The Hindu, The Indian Express, The Times of India etc.) and Employment News for the M.Tech notifications by various colleges.
The students may also contact their seniors/friends studying in various colleges for their suggestions and latest information about the colleges.

Preparation tips for GATE/IES in ECE stream by IIT Bombay Post Graduate

1) NETWORK THEORY
This is the most important and basic subject for any one. if you are perfect in this subject your 20 percent preparation is over.
1)Engineering Circuit Analysis -->Hayt
first read above book and solve both solved and unsolved example problems, later solve chapter wise alternate problems which have answers.
For IES aspirants above book will not cover total syllabus, for Synthesis and graphs fallow other books

2) EDC
1. Electronic Devices and Circuits & Analog Electronics-- Jacob Millman & Christos C. Halkias (BLOCK PAD)
For IES aspirants above book is enough, for GATE aspirants above book is not sufficient
2. Solid State Electronic Devices by Ben Streetman
This book is little bit tougher than First book if you understands streatman book your EDC is over
3) ANALOG circuits
If you are good in network theory and EDC then this is very easy subject for you, but this have huge syllabus
1. Electronic Devices and Circuits & Analog Electronics-- Jacob Millman & Christos C. Halkias (YELLOW PAD)
2. pulse and digital circuits by Jacob Miliman and taub's (White pad)
3. linear integrated circuits by roy chowdhury (for OPAMPS)
For GATE aspirants i will prefer sedra and smith book it is very good book. (but takes time to complete the book)
4) EMT
Every student will feel it is very tough, and commonly ECE students makes mistake they neglects coordinate and Basics in electrostatics and magnetics, my feel is that if you are good in above topics rest of the EMT you can understands easily
1) Elements of Electromagnetics --> Sadiku
It is very good book. fallow this book very well and solve all solved and unsolved example problems read from starting
for antenna basics also this book is enough

5)Digital
1)Boolean algebra and number system - kohavi
for other topics many good books are there but i prefers
2)Sequential circiuts - RPJAIN
3) Remaining topics MORIS mano and RPJAIN
4)Microprocessor Architecture, Programming & Application --> Ramesh S. Gaonkar (This is the best book for 8085)

6) Signals and Systems
1) Signal and System --> Oppenheim and Willsky
Read above book and solve example problems and also solve chapter wise basic prolems
2) Communication System by Simon Haykins 2nd edition (2nd edition is good for signals and system also) This book for random process topic

7) Communications
1) Communication System by Simon Haykins 2nd edition
Read this book and try to solve back problems (even though u r unable to solve problems no problem take solutions and look the solutions it will give idea how to solve the problems )
For IES aspirants solving back problems not required , but GATE aspirants it is required
and above book is good for Signals and System also

8)Control System
1) Automatic Control System -->B.C. Kuo ( i prefers this book)
2) Nagrath and gopal book is also very good book

9)MATHS
1) Higher Engineering Mathematics, Dr.B.S, Grewal
Read this book and solve only Example problems no need to solve exercise problem (if you are interested then it is good)

And finally every one knows reading books is only not enough to get good ranks but problems practicing is also most important, with problems solving not only useful for getting good ranks and also it will improves your subject knowledge also

for problems solving i will suggest
1) All shyam series books
2) RK KANODIA book (This is the most important)

above books are my suggestions only because i fallowed when i was prepared for GATE , if you are comfortable with some other books fallow those books only ,
But one thing when you starts reading any book first love that book then start read

Role of Practice Tests in Preparation

In this post let us discuss the way one should prepare and Role of tests in preparation for any Engineering Competitive examinations.

First prerequisite is, we should have a copy of syllabus of that particular exam. Those topics included in syllabus should be covered from standard books. Formulae sheets should be developed. Important points should be noted down. In your first read, every point may seem to be important for you. So, don’t note down points in the first reading of any book. You can take in second (if you are confident enough) or third reading. Means you have to read each book minimum two times. Now we can move on to second and important stage of preparation ie., Practice and Taking Tests.

Aspirant’s Rank/Percentile will depend on this stage only. Up to this level everybody is one and the same. No serious aspirant goes to exam without prior stage. But because of lack of guidance/awareness, many serious guys also attend exam without this stage. One who prepares properly for this, they only will become toppers. One has to practice/analyze old question papers, example/exercise problems from some good books, solve from problems oriented books, and attend tests. Proper orientation towards the exam will come from this stage only.

One has to analyze old question papers first. Once if aspirant complete one topic/subject in his first stage, he should take all questions from old question papers from that topic/subject. Then his confidence will improve in that area and he will come to know where to concentrate more in that topic/subject. Accordingly he can prepare again topics which are left unknowingly. But typical aspirant keep it to last in his preparation. Difficulty here can be understood. In market old GATE/IES question papers will be available in year wise that to with many mistakes. In the starting days of preparation, one cannot/ don’t want to segregate each paper to topic level/subject level. Typical aspirant want to first complete the syllabus and then want to see old question papers as MOCK exams. If you ask any topper of any competitive engineering examination, he will definitely say about topics left by him. So, orientation is needed at early stage of preparation. Now you should compare yourself with toppers for the tests prepared by Experts/toppers from previous batches. Here one should know the difference between MOCK/Practice exams and original exam he is going to appear. Now a day’s many websites/coaching institutes came up to do BUSINESS in this area. They are giving Rank/percentile blah blah…like original exam one is planning to appear. But at this stage you don’t want rank/percentile etc., (of course we also give this in our web platform) but

1. Your weak areas/strong areas compared to the topper of that particular exam. For example, if one take Subject level test, one should get the topic level analysis dynamically. So that one will come to know his weak areas in topic level compared to topper of that particular exam. If you take Branch level exam, like MOCK GATE etc., one should come to know his weak areas/strong areas at least at subject level compared to the topper of that exam. 2. As they are charging for taking online tests, nobody get confidence about their percentile or rank. Let us discuss with subject wise. Here we have many books for each subject. But by experience we are going to give one book for each subject/topic. Our intention is not to say other books are not recommended, but we are recommending these. We took old question papers analysis, and depending on that we give preference to each.

Paper-I

1. Electro Magnetic Theory

Book: Hayt upto Maxwell Equations, and Jordan & Ballman after Maxwells Equations. For problems one may depend on Hayt solutions or Sadiku.

For objective: We may expect around 15 questions from this area. Out of which questions from Transmission lines cover least 4 questions.
